What Are Crown?
A dental crown is a cap placed over a tooth to restore its shape and size, improve its appearance, or strengthen it. The crown fits right over the tooth and is bonded securely in place so it will not come loose or fall out. It will look like a natural tooth and be stronger and more durable.

Why Might I Need a Dental Crown?
Crowns are a recommended solution when a tooth is cracked, severely worn down, or infected to the point that it is structurally unsound. A crown protects the remaining healthy tooth structure and restores the tooth’s appearance, shape, and size. Dental crowns can also be used with dental implants to replace missing teeth.
If a tooth has a deep filling or becomes weak due to a large cavity, our dentist may recommend a crown. Fillings do not replace the crown of a tooth, so a crown may be necessary if the cavity is too large for a simple filling.
Cracks are another common reason for recommending a crown. While fillings can repair small chips in teeth, larger fractures may require a crown to protect the tooth from further damage. The stress caused by chewing can cause teeth to fracture or break. A fractured or cracked tooth is a serious oral health concern since a broken tooth can lead to tooth loss or even damage to the surrounding teeth.
The Procedure for Dental Crowns
Before the procedure begins, our dentist will apply a local anesthetic to the area to minimize any discomfort during the procedure. The dentist will prepare the tooth by removing a small amount of enamel from all sides of the tooth. This creates space for the crown to fit comfortably and securely. If the tooth is severely damaged or decayed, additional tooth structure may need to be removed to ensure a proper fit for the crown.
After the tooth is prepared, the dentist will take an impression using a putty-like material or a digital scanner. This impression or scan is used as a model for creating a custom crown that precisely fits your tooth. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where technicians will fabricate the crown.
Once the permanent crown is ready, you will return to our dental office to have it placed. The dentist will remove the temporary crown, clean and inspect the prepared tooth, and ensure that the permanent crown fits properly. The crown's color, shape, and fit will be evaluated, and necessary adjustments can be made. Once you are satisfied, the dentist will use dental cement or bonding material to secure the crown onto the tooth permanently.
